Car would crank but not start first try, now battery is dead?

i think it could be a bad alternator. if you just bought a new battery and its now dead.....there's no way it would die that quickly unless the alternator is not working...check the alternator and the belts. before you stopped driving the car completely, did the battery light come on ??
